Some hotels are all about design. Whether it is for Instagram-friendly moments or because the client favours architectural purism over embellishment, certain hotels are overflowing with design-led features. We take a look at some of the most extravagant designs in hotels around the world.
Aqua Dome Hotel, Austria
This 4-star spa and wellness facilities is located smack bang in the middle of the Austrian Alps, and this impressive mountain range has been the inspiration for this quirky and over the top hotel. The crowning moment of exaggeration in this hotel comes in the outdoor pool area, where a number of outdoor pools levitate in semi-circular bowls with conical structures that are intended to mimic the mountain peaks in between them. In winter, the effect of steam rising off these pools is atmospheric, and almost eerie, as if steaming alien ships have landed on Earth.
Amangiri Resort, Utah, United States
Another hotel where the pool takes centre stage is the Amangiri Resort in Utah in the US. Located in the middle of the Utah desert, this hotel makes a feature out of the region’s famous rock formations and has made an undulating rocky bluff the centrepoint of the pool design. Visitors can lounge poolside while taking in the spectacular desert setting by being surrounded by its grandeur.
Hotel Ovolo Nishi, Canberra, Australia
Formerly known as Hotel Hotel, this property recently made a brand switch to Ovolo, but it has lost none of its impressive design features. Located within the Nishi residential building, the hotel announces its design credentials from the outset, with an impressive geometric canopy welcoming visitors into its sophisticated interior. Concrete reigns supreme inside, as does timber, and guests will be treated to visual delights as these materials manifest themselves in different forms across various sectors of the hotel.
Plaza Athénée Hotel, Paris, France
Part of the luxury Dorchester Collection, this 5-star hotel really goes all out when it comes to exaggerated design. Located on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne, visitors can come and experience the best the French capital has to offer. Where the hotel really shines is in its restaurant, which has taken opulent design to the next level. The ceiling is awash with twinkling crystal chandeliers, while the seating in the dining room consists of mirrored, circular banquets that give the effect of giant baubles that reflect everything to give the visitor an immersive design experience.
Four Seasons Toronto, Toronto, Canada
A sense of calm is palpable immediately as guests enter the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto. Series of delicate wooden screens break up the space, and the reception desk is backed by a wall of luxurious marble that reaches all the way to the ceiling. The emphasis is on the vertical, and visitors are humbled by the scale of the space, but brought back to earth by the intricacy of the design that surrounds them in the details.
